About Kyra

My name is Kyra Bowie (she/her). I am a proud AEA theatre-maker with formal training from NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Broadway Dance Center, and The Atlantic Acting School. Certified Intimacy Captain by Intimacy Coordinators of Color, I consider myself a life-long student. My passion for theatre runs deep on and off stage. Since I began pursuing a career in theatre, I have found both technical and artistic aspects of the stage equally fulfilling, and I feel my training and experience in one informs the other.

Who am I behind the scenes?

I am a diligent and committed stage manager who is always willing to go the extra mile for the work. My stage management practice centers around kindness, safety, and distinguishing the difference between discomfort while creating and discomfort as a human being. I believe in being open and transparent with information and people to establish clarity in communication and expectations.

One project I am particularly proud of is my position as Production Stage Manager on The Orchard, which featured Jessica Hecht as Ranyeskaya and Mikhail Baryshnikov as Firs. Onstage was an industrial robot that interacted with the actors (yes, the kind that crushes cars), a quadruped named Pesnik played the family dog, and over fifteen cameras that were curated for the online virtual experience. Lights, sound, automation, projectors, camera movements, and cuts were all triggered from one single QLab. Talk about having to be sure every cue was called perfectly! You can hear me speak about this experience further in an interview the company gave with BirdDog here.

Recent developmental works include Just Tell No One (at Lincoln Center starring Jessica Hecht and Bill Irwin), Once Bitten (composed by Matt Gumley and starring Orfeh), How To Repair A Mechanical Heart (composed by Trent Jeffords, starring Troy Iwata and Chris Medlin), as well as digital reading series at Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Conch Shell Productions, and Planet Connections. I have also worked professionally as the Production Stage Manager for the Off-Broadway production of Camp Morning Wood: A Very Naked Musical, Still, Birth. performed at The Chain, and the Assistant Stage Manager to Suzi Bonnot for Arlington at The New School of Drama.

Who am I on stage?

I am a triple-threat performer that sports a badass pair of purple boots. I am audacious, daring, and bold; think Laura Prepon mixed with a warmer version of Bebe Neuwirth. I have trained extensively in many forms of dance, voice, and acting. Some of my favorite credits include the title role in an all-female Julius Caesar directed by Danya Taymor, Bessie Berger in Awake & Sing! directed by Paul Schnee, and productions of Cabaret and Spamalot.

In addition to my love of theatre, I am always eager to get my nose in a new book, drink a quality cup of coffee, and play board games with friends!

What Other People Have To Say…

Kyra Bowie is one of the most talented, enthusiastic, committed stage managers I have ever worked with. When Conch Shell Productions started its journey into hybrid theatre, we brought Kyra on board for the ride. She mastered all of the software and platforms needed for Conch Shell Productions to excel. Her project management skills - let’s just say you can breathe easy when you have Kyra Bowie on your production team.

If I had a gold star to give you for student of the week, you’d get it every time!

[Kyra] is great in a crisis.

To say that Kyra was fabulous would be an understatement! From the moment our team met Kyra Bowie, she could not have been more professional, enthusiastic about our project, hardworking, and more knowledgeable about what we needed. We absolutely could not have held our event without her. I cannot recommend her any higher, and cannot wait until we hold another event so we can hire her again!
— Amy Gewirtz
I can tell you that if she says she will do something, she will do it. If she says something will get done, it will get done. She is organized, clear-thinking and unflappable. I do not understand how it is possible for her to also be a good actress but she is that as well.

Kyra ran my not for profit’s last fundraiser. She went beyond expectation. Organized and efficient beforehand, the night of the fundraiser I could sit back and enjoy knowing the run of the night was in good hands. Highly recommend

Kyra’s expertise in all things virtual was invaluable. She came up with innovative methods to make performance on zoom more user friendly - and found hacks that were completely outside of the box and beyond the functions of the platform to help enhance the presentation. I can’t imagine anyone out there has taken the time nor has the intelligence and know how to help someone render a top notch production online. I can’t say enough about this co.
